Concrete Retaining Walls Across the Fraser Coast

A retaining wall does a serious job — it holds back soil, manages levels and stops slopes from slumping — so it has to be built properly. A wall that looks fine on day one but has no drainage behind it, or that is built too high without engineering, is a wall waiting to fail. We build concrete sleeper and besser block retaining walls across the Fraser Coast that are designed for the load, drained correctly and built to stand the test of time and weather.

Concrete sleeper walls use steel posts set in concrete footings with sleepers slotted between them — strong, clean-looking and quick to build for a range of heights. Besser block walls are core-filled and reinforced for a solid, rendered or face finish that suits more substantial retaining and feature walls. We will talk you through which suits your site, your levels and the look you are after, whether you are terracing a sloping block in Hervey Bay or holding back a cut at Rainbow Beach.

Drainage is what separates a wall that lasts from one that fails. Soil behind a wall holds water, and that water builds up pressure that can push a wall over if it has nowhere to go. So behind every wall we install drainage aggregate and ag-pipe to collect and carry water away, plus weep holes or an outlet so it can escape. Skipping this is the most common reason retaining walls fail, and we never skip it.

Height brings engineering into it. Walls over a certain height generally require engineering design and often council approval, because the higher the wall the more load it holds back and the more serious a failure becomes. We build to engineering where it is required and tell you honestly when your wall needs it. QBCC licensed and insured, local, and we leave the site clean.

What We Offer

Concrete sleeper walls

Steel posts in concrete footings with concrete sleepers between — strong, clean and versatile for a range of heights.

Besser block walls

Core-filled, reinforced block walls for solid, substantial retaining, ready to render or finish as a feature.

Drainage & ag-pipe

Drainage aggregate and ag-pipe behind the wall to collect and carry water away — the key to a wall that lasts.

Weep holes & outlets

Weep holes and proper outlets so water behind the wall can escape rather than building up damaging pressure.

Engineering for height

Walls built to engineering design where required, with footings and reinforcement sized for the load and height.

Footings & reinforcement

Properly sized and reinforced footings so the wall has a solid base and stays put under load.

Our Retaining Walls Process

No mystery, no shortcuts. Here's exactly how we approach every retaining walls job on the Fraser Coast — so you know what's happening at each stage.

  1. 01

Free on-site consult & site assessment

We visit, look at the slope, the levels and the soil, and discuss what the wall needs to hold back and the look you want. We talk through sleeper versus besser block and flag early whether the height will need engineering or council approval.

  2. 02

    Written fixed quote, itemised

Your quote details the excavation, footings, the wall system, the drainage aggregate and ag-pipe, backfill and clean-up. Everything is spelled out, including any engineering requirement, so you know exactly what is included.

  3. 03

    Booking, set-out & excavation

We confirm a date and set out the wall line, then excavate for the footings and the wall. Getting the line and levels right at this stage is what makes the finished wall straight, true and properly seated.

  4. 04

    Footings & posts

We dig and pour the footings to the right size for the load and height, and set the steel posts plumb and at the correct spacing in concrete. For block walls we lay and reinforce the base course on a sound footing.

  5. 05

    Building the wall

We install the sleepers between the posts, or lay and core-fill the blocks course by course with reinforcement, checking levels and line as we go so the wall is straight and solid the whole way along.

  6. 06

    Drainage, ag-pipe & backfill

Behind the wall we install drainage aggregate and ag-pipe to carry water away, with weep holes or an outlet so it can escape. We then backfill correctly so the wall is not loaded unevenly. This drainage step is what makes the wall last.

  7. 07

    Finish, clean-up & walkthrough

We tidy the finish, clean up the site and cart away the spoil and rubbish, then walk you through the completed wall and how the drainage works. Your tax invoice is provided on completion.

No surprises

Honest, Transparent Pricing

Retaining walls are quoted as a fixed price in writing before we start, with the excavation, footings, the wall system, the drainage aggregate and ag-pipe, backfill and clean-up all itemised, plus a GST tax invoice on completion. The drainage is always in the quote, never an optional extra, because it is the part that makes the wall last. No vague verbal pricing.

Retaining walls are where ground conditions can throw up genuine variations — rock when excavating footings, or soil that turns out to need a different approach. If that happens we stop, show you, and agree any change in writing before we proceed. You will never be hit with an extra you did not approve.

We are honest about engineering and approvals, which is non-negotiable on retaining walls. If your wall is high enough to need an engineer's design or council approval, we will tell you straight rather than building something that could fail or fall foul of the rules. A retaining wall is not the place to cut corners, and we will not pretend otherwise to win a job.

Why Locals Choose Us

🧱

Built for the load

Footings, reinforcement and engineering sized to hold back the soil — a wall that stays put under pressure.

💧

Drained properly

Ag-pipe, drainage aggregate and weep holes so water escapes instead of building pressure that pushes walls over.

📏

Engineered when needed

We build to engineering and sort approvals where the height requires it — straight advice, done by the book.

Concrete Retaining Walls FAQs

Why is drainage so important behind a retaining wall?
Soil behind a wall holds water, and that water builds up pressure that can push a wall over. Drainage aggregate and ag-pipe collect that water and carry it away, with weep holes or an outlet to let it escape. Skipping drainage is the most common reason retaining walls fail, which is why we always build it in.
Does my retaining wall need council approval or engineering?
It depends on the height and the situation. Walls over a certain height generally require engineering design and often council approval, because of the loads involved and the consequences of failure. We will assess your wall and tell you honestly whether it needs engineering or approval, and we build to that design where it does.
What is the difference between concrete sleeper and besser block walls?
Concrete sleeper walls use steel posts in concrete footings with sleepers between them — strong, clean-looking and versatile. Besser block walls are core-filled and reinforced for a solid, substantial wall that can be rendered or finished as a feature. We will recommend which suits your site, height and the look you want.
How long do concrete retaining walls last?
Built properly — with the right footings, reinforcement, engineering for height and good drainage — a concrete retaining wall lasts decades. The things that shorten that life are skipped drainage and undersized footings, which is exactly where we do not cut corners. Done right, it is a long-term solution.
Can you build a retaining wall on a sloping or difficult block?
Yes — sloping and tricky blocks are common on the Fraser Coast and around Rainbow Beach. We assess the slope, levels and soil, set the footings to suit, and can terrace or step the wall where needed. We will tell you what the site requires and quote it clearly so there are no surprises.
